WooCommerce: Show Empty Categories


The WooCommerce: Show Empty Categories allows your site to show categories that either have no products or have no available products. This can help situations where your categories contain useful content that your site’s visitors may need and you need to continue to show that content even if the products assigned become unavailable.

If you’re the type that prefers functions.php snippets this is where you can find the code snippet for this plugin.


  1. Login to your dashboard
  2. Go to WooCommerce -> Settings
  3. Click the “Products” tab
  4. Under the tabs click “Display”
  5. If you want the main shop page to show empty categories (screenshot below):
    • Update the “Shop page display” to be:
      • Show categories & products
      • Show categories
  6. If you want category pages to show empty subcategories (screenshot below):
    • Update the “Default category display” to be:
      • Show subcategories & products
      • Show subcategories
  7. Click “Save changes”
  8. Download this plugin
  9. Upload and activate this plugin
